ਜੇ ਮੈਂ ਸਾਰੇ ਭਵਣਾਂ ਦੇ ਪਦਾਰਥਾਂ ਦੇ ਢੇਰ (ਭੀ) ਸਾਂਭ ਲਵਾਂ, ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੇ ਅਧੀਨ ਰਿਹਾਂ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ ਦੂਰ ਨਹੀਂ ਹੋ ਸਕਦੀ।
The hunger of the hungry is not appeased, even by piling up loads of worldly goods.
ਜੇ (ਮੇਰੇ ਵਿਚ) ਹਜ਼ਾਰਾਂ ਤੇ ਲੱਖਾਂ ਚਤੁਰਾਈਆਂ ਹੋਵਣ, (ਤਾਂ ਭੀ ਉਹਨਾਂ ਵਿਚੋਂ) ਇਕ ਭੀ ਚਤੁਰਾਈ ਸਾਥ ਨਹੀਂ ਦੇਂਦੀ।
Hundreds of thousands of clever tricks, but not even one of them will go along with you in the end.
(ਪੜੇ੍ਹ ਹੋਏ ਲੋਕ) ਬੇਅੰਤ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਲਿਖ ਲਿਖ ਕੇ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ ਵਿਚਾਰਦੇ ਹਨ, (ਗਿਆਨ ਦੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ) ਸੁਣ ਸੁਣ ਕੇ (ਲੋਕਾਂ ਦੀਆਂ ਨਜ਼ਰਾਂ ਵਿਚ ਵਿਚਾਰਵਾਨ (ਦਿੱਸਣ ਦਾ) ਵਿਅਰਥ ਜਤਨ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ
Again and again, we hear and tell stories; we read and write and understand loads of knowledge,
ਪਰ ਅੰਤਰ ਆਤਮੇ ਦਿਨ-ਰਾਤ ਬਹੁਤ ਤ੍ਰਿਸ਼ਨਾ (ਵਿਆਪ ਰਹੀ) ਹੈ, ਅੰਦਰ ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਰੋਗ, ਹਉਮੈ ਦਾ ਵਿਕਾਰ (ਕਾਇਮ) ਹੈ
but still, desires increase day and night, and the disease of egotism fills us with corruption.
ਜੇ ਇਤਨੀਆਂ ਪੋਥੀਆਂ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਲਈਏ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਕਈ ਗੱਡੀਆਂ ਭਰ ਲਈਆਂ ਜਾ ਸਕਣ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਦੇ ਢੇਰਾਂ ਦੇ ਢੇਰ ਲਗਾਏ ਜਾ ਸਕਣ;
You may read and read loads of books; you may read and study vast multitudes of books.
ਜੇ ਇਤਨੀਆਂ ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਲਈਏ, ਜਿਨ੍ਹਾਂ ਨਾਲ ਇਕ ਬੇੜੀ ਭਰੀ ਜਾ ਸਕੇ, ਕਈ ਖਾਤੇ ਪੂਰੇ ਜਾ ਸਕਣ;
You may read and read boat-loads of books; you may read and read and fill pits with them.
ਨਿਰੇ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਸੁਣਨ ਤੋਂ ਕੋਈ ਫ਼ਾਇਦਾ ਨਹੀਂ
What use is it to read, and what use is it to study?
ਹੇ ਗੰਵਾਰ!) ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ
What use is it to listen to the Vedas and the Puraanas?
ਜੇ ਇਸ ਪੜ੍ਹਨ ਸੁਣਨ ਦੇ ਕੁਦਰਤੀ ਨਤੀਜੇ ਦੇ ਤੌਰ ਤੇ
What use is reading and listening,
ਉਸ ਪ੍ਰਭੂ ਦਾ ਮਿਲਾਪ ਨਾਹ ਹੋਵੇ
if celestial peace is not attained? ||1||
ਹੇ ਭਾਈ! ਜੇਹੜੇ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਵੇਦ ਪੁਰਾਣ ਸਿੰਮ੍ਰਿਤੀਆਂ ਆਦਿਕ ਧਰਮ-ਪੁਸਤਕਾਂ ਪੜ੍ਹ ਕੇ (ਨਾਮ ਨੂੰ ਲਾਂਭੇ ਛੱਡ ਕੇ ਕਰਮ ਕਾਂਡ ਆਦਿਕ ਦਾ ਉਪਦੇਸ਼) ਉੱਚੀ ਉੱਚੀ ਸੁਣਾਂਦੇ ਹਨ,
The Simritees, the Vedas, the Puraanas and the other holy scriptures proclaim
ਉਹ ਮਨੁੱਖ ਥੋਥੀਆਂ ਗੱਲਾਂ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ । ਪਰਮਾਤਮਾ ਦੇ ਨਾਮ ਤੋਂ ਬਿਨਾ ਝੂਠਾ ਪਰਚਾਰ ਹੀ ਇਹ ਸਾਰੇ ਲੋਕ ਕਰਦੇ ਹਨ ।੧।
